Windsor-Essex, Ontario, is experiencing significant rainfall, leading to a flood watch issued by the Essex Region Conservation Authority. Overnight, rain gauges recorded between 20 to 30 millimetres of rainfall, with forecasts predicting an additional 20 millimetres of rain on Wednesday.
Flood Warnings and Impacts
Environment Canada has also issued a rainfall warning for the region. Chatham-Kent is currently under a flood warning due to rising levels of the Thames River, which is expected to peak in Thamesville and Chatham. Flooding of basements along King Street is anticipated due to the ongoing rainfall.
The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority reported 4 to 23 millimetres of rainfall in the last 12 hours, and one road in St. Clair Township has been closed due to overtaking water. Residents are advised to exercise caution and avoid areas prone to flooding, as well as rivers, streams, and shoreline areas during these significant weather events.
Operational Measures
To mitigate flooding risks, the 6th Street Dam and Pumping Station are operational to protect Chatham from potential flooding. However, Jason Wintermute from the conservation authority cautioned that with the dam closed, the pumping station may struggle to keep up with the higher rainfall amounts forecasted.

Mark Peacock, a local official, noted, “If we get another system like we just had overnight, it could impact more people.” This sentiment reflects the growing concern among residents and officials alike regarding the severity of the weather conditions.
