Mission Fire: Senior Care Home Engulfed in Flames

Mission Fire Response

“Staff from the retirement residence are still in the process of trying to confirm whether everyone was safely evacuated,” stated a representative from Mission RCMP as a significant fire broke out at the Chartwell Carrington House on March 9, 2026.

The fire ignited around 6 p.m. on 7th Avenue near Cedar Valley Connector, quickly engulfing the senior care home in flames. Flames and smoke were visibly rising from the building, prompting an immediate response from the Mission Fire Rescue Service and other emergency resources.

Evacuations and Emergency Services

Residents of the retirement home were evacuated, and a Reception Centre was established at the nearby Mission Leisure Centre to assist those affected. Emergency Support Services were on the scene to provide help to evacuees, ensuring their safety and comfort during the incident.

As multiple firefighters and engines battled the structure fire, 7th Avenue was closed in both directions between Cedar Street and Briskham Street to facilitate emergency operations. By 7:07 p.m., firefighters reported that the third floor had been searched and was clear, allowing for a more focused approach to controlling the blaze.

Ongoing Efforts and Mutual Aid

By 7:15 p.m., a confinement crew continued to battle the flames, which had fully engulfed the building. The Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was paged for mutual aid, highlighting the scale of the emergency response.

“Mission Fire Rescue Service and all available emergency resources are on scene and actively responding,” the City of Mission reported, emphasizing the coordinated effort to manage the situation.

As of 7:22 p.m., nurses from the facility arrived with three car loads of blankets to assist evacuees, demonstrating community support during this crisis. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any injuries, as officials continue to assess the situation.

Future Updates

“Additional updates will be provided as they become available,” the City of Mission stated, indicating that further information will be shared as the situation develops.

Residents and community members are advised, “If you do not need to be in the vicinity, choose an alternate route and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles,” as the response to this mission fire continues to unfold.
