Mission fire: Senior Care Home Engulfed in Flames in Mission, BC

Mission Fire Engulfs Senior Care Home

“Staff from the retirement residence are still in the process of trying to confirm whether everyone was safely evacuated,” stated a representative from Mission RCMP as a fire raged at Chartwell Carrington House on March 9, 2026.

The fire broke out around 6 p.m. on 7th Avenue near Cedar Valley Connector, leading to a rapid response from the Mission Fire Rescue Service and multiple firefighting units. Flames and smoke were visible rising from the building, prompting immediate action to evacuate residents.

A Reception Centre has been established at the nearby Mission Leisure Centre to assist evacuees. Emergency Support Services are on scene to provide necessary aid.

As firefighters battled the structure fire, 7th Avenue was closed in both directions between Cedar Street and Briskham Street to facilitate emergency operations. By 7:07 p.m., firefighters reported that the third floor had been searched and cleared, although the building was fully engulfed in flames.

“Mission Fire Rescue Service and all available emergency resources are on scene and actively responding,” the City of Mission confirmed. In addition, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service has been paged for mutual aid.

As of 7:15 p.m., a confinement crew continued to battle the blaze, while nurses arrived with three carloads of blankets at 7:22 p.m. to assist those affected.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any injuries or the total number of residents evacuated. The situation is still developing, and additional updates will be provided as they become available.

Authorities are urging the public, “If you do not need to be in the vicinity, choose an alternate route and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.”
