The transition to electric and hybrid vehicles in Abbotsford has been increasing over the past three years. As of 2025, electric and hybrid vehicles accounted for 12.8% of the total vehicles in the city, with 4,928 electric vehicles and 6,722 hybrid vehicles on the roads.
This growth represents a significant increase, with the number of electric and hybrid vehicles more than doubling since 2022. The province of British Columbia has also seen a rise in the share of these vehicles, from 12.1% to 14.4% between 2024 and 2025.
Adrian Dix, a provincial official, stated, “We have more than 7,000 public charging stations throughout the province and are on track to meet our target of 10,000 by 2030.” This infrastructure development is crucial for supporting the growing number of electric vehicles.
In Abbotsford, the local dealership Castlegar Hyundai has made notable strides, selling 24 battery electric vehicles in 2025. Keith Kalawsky, the dealership’s representative, expressed excitement about their recognition, saying, “We are surprised and thrilled to be recognized by Clean BC.”
The Green Star Awards, which honor car dealers for their sales of clean energy vehicles, recognized Castlegar Hyundai for its achievements in the Interior Region.
Blair Qualey, another key figure in the automotive sector, commented on the provincial government’s efforts, stating, “We appreciate the provincial government’s recognition of these pressures and its commitment to a comprehensive review of ZEV mandates next spring.”
The increasing adoption of electric vehicles in Abbotsford reflects a broader commitment to sustainability and clean energy in British Columbia. As more residents opt for electric and hybrid options, the local market is adapting to meet this demand.
