Aga khan: What Recent Developments Involve in Canada?

On March 25, 2026, during his visit to Ottawa, Canada, Aga Khan announced the creation of an Economic Partnership Platform in collaboration with Prime Minister Mark Carney. This initiative aims to advance joint efforts in sub-Saharan Africa and the Asia Pacific regions, marking a significant step in international cooperation.

The partnership reflects a shared commitment between the Government of Canada and the Ismaili Imamat to foster inclusive economic development. As part of this collaboration, the Ismaili Imamat is set to invest in multi-generational not-for-profit housing projects across Canada, which will facilitate the construction of affordable homes for low- and moderate-income households.

Rahim Aga Khan V, the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Nizari Ismaili Muslims, is visiting Canada from March 25 to 31, 2026. This visit is particularly noteworthy as it includes community-focused engagements and the inauguration of a housing project in Toronto, which is expected to benefit the estimated 120,000 Ismailis living in Canada.

The Canada-Ismaili Imamat Joint Steering Committee will oversee the implementation of the partnership’s deliverables, which encompass collaboration on education, technology, and energy initiatives. Mark Carney emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “This will include formalizing the partnership between FinDev Canada and the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development.”

Aga Khan expressed optimism about expanding cooperation with Canada, noting, “The values and principles that are so inherently Canadian, we share.” He added, “Today will set the stage for more work together to make the world a better place.” Carney described the meeting as a “historic day,” underscoring the significance of this partnership.

The partnership between Canada and the Ismaili Imamat spans more than five decades, highlighting a long-standing relationship focused on mutual development goals. As the initiative unfolds, it is expected to yield positive outcomes for communities in both Canada and the regions targeted for development.
