Nancy Mace under investigation
Nancy Mace is currently under investigation by the House ethics committee over allegations of improper reimbursement claims. The inquiry focuses on claims that exceed $9,000, which were intended to subsidize housing costs for members of Congress.
The Office of Congressional Conduct (OCC) reported that Mace’s reimbursement requests surpassed her actual property expenses in Washington D.C. during several months in 2023 and 2024. Specifically, Mace claimed an excess of $9,485.46 in reimbursements.
In addition to her reimbursement claims, Mace has a 28% ownership stake in the D.C. property in question. However, details remain unconfirmed regarding the extent of her financial obligations related to this property.
Mace was participating in a federal program designed to assist lawmakers with lodging, food, and travel expenses. Despite the ongoing investigation, she did not respond to inquiries from the OCC and declined to be interviewed for their review.
In a response to the investigation, Mace’s office accused the OCC of being a partisan office that retaliates against women. This statement reflects the contentious atmosphere surrounding the inquiry.
Adding to the political tension, Hillary Clinton publicly criticized Mace during her deposition before the House Oversight Committee. Clinton accused Mace of leaking a photo of her testimony to a MAGA influencer, further complicating Mace’s political landscape.
Mace is not seeking re-election to the House and is instead running for the Republican nomination for governor of South Carolina, with the primary scheduled for June 9.
William Sullivan, a spokesperson for Mace, expressed confidence that the committee will evaluate the information thoroughly and recognize deficiencies in the report. “Rep Mace is confident that the committee will carefully evaluate the origins and credibility of the information at issue and will recognize the significant deficiencies that undermine the report,” Sullivan stated.
The investigation into Mace’s reimbursement claims continues, with the outcome potentially impacting her gubernatorial campaign and political future.
As this situation unfolds, the credibility of the information in the OCC report remains unconfirmed, leaving many questions unanswered regarding Mace’s actions and their implications.
