Jamie Lee Curtis Returns to SXSW Film Festival

Jamie Lee Curtis made headlines at the SXSW Film Festival, where she discussed her return as Laurie Strode in the Halloween franchise, which includes the films Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021), and Halloween Ends (2022). Curtis initially believed her return would be a one-time event but later learned it was part of a trilogy, a revelation she admitted might have changed her decision to participate.

“If they had come to me and said it’s going to be a trilogy, I don’t think I would have said yes,” Curtis stated, reflecting on her unexpected journey through the horror series. Despite her initial hesitations, she has leveraged her involvement in the franchise to negotiate a development deal with Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, describing it as a ‘vanity deal’ to fund projects with filmmaker Russell Goldman.

The Halloween films have had varied critical receptions, with Halloween (2018) earning a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while its sequels, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, received 38% and 40% ratings, respectively. Curtis, who has been vocal about her past experiences with cosmetic surgery, has expressed a strong stance against cosmetic tweaks, emphasizing the impact of the cosmeceutical industrial complex on women.

Although Curtis is not a huge fan of the horror genre, she appreciates the independent filmmaking aspect, stating, “I’m in love with the independent filmmaking aspect of the genre.” This passion is evident in her new projects, which she hopes to develop under her deal with Blum.

Currently, the Halloween franchise is on hold, with discussions about a potential TV series ongoing. Observers are keen to see how Curtis’s new ventures will unfold and what direction the franchise will take next. Details remain unconfirmed.
