Instagram Experiences Widespread Outage
Instagram has reported a significant outage affecting users’ ability to send direct messages (DMs) across the United States. As of 10:03 PM EST on March 10, over 6,000 users had logged complaints on Downdetector, indicating a widespread issue.
The outage has primarily impacted direct messaging, with 68% of complaints related to app disruptions, 19% concerning server connection issues, and 7% about posting troubles. Major cities including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington D.C., and New York have been among the hardest hit.
During the outage, Instagram’s messaging system became completely non-functional, leaving many users unable to send or receive DMs. This disruption has prompted some users to turn to alternative messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
Downdetector noted a spike in user complaints beginning in the evening hours, with reports peaking at one point with 4,700 users experiencing issues. Additionally, some users faced broader server connection problems, preventing them from loading their feeds or stories.
The outage highlights the critical role that direct messaging plays in Instagram’s ecosystem, driving real engagement among users. As users expressed their frustrations online, one user tweeted, “Instagram down I REPEAT INSTAGRAM DOWN,” while another remarked, “Are Instagram DMs down or… am I cooked?”
Despite the widespread nature of the issue, technical problems at Instagram do not appear to be affecting other Meta-owned platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. However, Meta has not yet released a formal statement addressing the technical issues or providing a timeline for resolution.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the official cause of the outage, and claims linking it to the US-Iran conflict remain unverified. As users continue to experience difficulties, many are left wondering when the service will be restored.
As the situation develops, users are encouraged to stay updated through official channels and social media for any announcements from Instagram or Meta regarding the outage.
