Chelsea Handler’s acquisition of a house from RFK Jr. and Cheryl Hines for $5.9 million has turned into a prolonged ordeal, as she claims the property was left in an “unlivable” condition. Handler has been unable to move into the home for five years since the purchase.
Handler revealed that the house, built in 1937 and featuring five bedrooms, was bought through a private trust registered under her sister’s name. She was unaware that the sellers were RFK Jr. and Cheryl Hines until after the transaction was completed.
According to Handler, a home inspector informed her that the property had “the most toxic environment,” and she stated that it could not be lived in for at least two years after the purchase. “This house is the most toxic environment. You cannot live here for at least two years,” Handler quoted.
Further complicating matters, Handler discovered an illegal outdoor storage unit on the property after multiple renovations. She described the situation as a “disaster,” stating, “It was a disaster, and I didn’t know it going in because everything was, you know, under wraps.”
Handler received a note from Cheryl Hines offering assistance after the sale, indicating some acknowledgment of the issues that arose post-purchase. However, the extent of the problems has left Handler frustrated and unable to utilize her investment.
