In a significant turn of events for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Brad Treliving was fired as the team’s general manager on a Monday in late October 2023. Treliving, who had been in his third season as GM, took over the role on May 31, 2023, replacing Kyle Dubas. During Treliving’s time with the Maple Leafs, the team achieved a record of 129 wins, 82 losses, and 27 overtime losses. Keith Pelley, the team’s president, emphasized the need for a change in leadership, stating, “I don’t believe the current state of the team rests on Brad’s shoulders but after analysis throughout the entire year… I made the decision supported by ownership that the team must chart a new course under different leadership to achieve our ultimate championship goal.” Pelley highlighted the necessity for a new direction, indicating that the team requires a leader who is data-centric in their approach to hockey operations.
As Treliving’s era came to an end, he left behind a record of 139-92-27 with the Maple Leafs, which included only a single playoff series win over Ottawa. His previous experience as GM of the Calgary Flames, where he served for nine seasons, included two playoff series victories, which may have raised expectations for his performance in Toronto.
In the wake of Treliving’s departure, the Maple Leafs have appointed Brandon Pridham and Ryan Hardy to share the duties of interim general manager. The organization is now actively seeking a new general manager who can implement the right structure, processes, and culture necessary for success. Pelley noted, “We have all the resources to be successful but without the right structure, the right processes in place, without the right culture, without the alignment and accountability among everyone inside the operation, we will not be successful.”
