Severe Weather Impacting Barrie
Severe weather is currently affecting Barrie, Ontario, leading to significant power outages and disruptions in daily life. Approximately 1,172 homes and businesses are without power due to three separate outages, with two of these outages being attributed to the ongoing adverse weather conditions.
Environment Canada has issued multiple weather warnings for parts of southern Ontario, including Barrie. These warnings include alerts for rainfall and freezing rain, with expectations of significant rainfall reaching up to 40 millimetres across the region.
In addition to power outages, the severe weather has resulted in school closures. All schools, child care centres, and facilities under the Trillium Lakelands District School Board are closed due to the ongoing freezing rain, prompting officials to encourage students to use this time productively. Carolynne Bull stated, “We hope students will take this opportunity to catch up on work, or read/listen to a good book.”
Flooding has also been reported in downtown Toronto, where streetcars are not servicing the Dufferin Loop due to weather-related conditions. This further highlights the widespread impact of the severe weather across the region.
Initially, over 4,000 homes and businesses were impacted by power outages, but efforts are ongoing to restore services as conditions allow. The situation remains fluid, with additional warnings for freezing rain issued for surrounding areas, including Kawartha Lakes.
As the weather continues to evolve, residents are advised to stay informed and prepared for further developments. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the impact and the timeline for power restoration.
