“The investigation conducted by local law enforcement has concluded and has been found to be unfounded,” stated Eric Forest, a representative from Sûreté du Québec, following a security incident at Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL).

The incident began when a suspicious suitcase was discovered, initially treated as a potential bomb threat. This prompted immediate action, including the activation of standard security protocols to ensure the safety of travelers and airport facilities.

As a precaution, one runway was closed, and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop for flights bound for YUL. “The ground stop means those flights will not take off,” an FAA spokesperson explained.

By 3:30 p.m., flights were significantly reduced, affecting numerous domestic and cross-border flights. The situation extended its impact across a wide expanse of airspace, including regions of the eastern and midwestern United States.

Fortunately, the investigation concluded that there was no bomb threat, despite the initial FAA alert referencing one. “There was no bomb threat, despite an initial FAA alert referencing one,” confirmed a spokesperson from the Quebec provincial police.

Both suspects, aged in their 20s and 30s, were arrested but later released. They could still face charges of fraud related to the incident. The investigation was conducted by local law enforcement, ensuring a thorough review of the situation.

Following the investigation, both runways were reopened shortly before 5 p.m., allowing flights to resume. However, some flights experienced delays of up to one hour due to congestion caused by the earlier ground stop.

As the airport returns to normal operations, officials continue to emphasize the importance of security measures in protecting the traveling public. Standard protocols were activated swiftly, demonstrating the airport’s commitment to safety.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further developments or potential charges against the suspects. The situation serves as a reminder of the vigilance required in airport security.
