In recent months, two major settlements have emerged in North America, both tied to significant data breaches. The incidents at MGM Resorts International date back to July 2019 and were compounded by another event in September 2023. More than 37 million customers were affected during the initial cyberattack.

As of now, Canadians impacted by these breaches can claim a portion of a proposed $4 million settlement. Eligible individuals may receive compensation for substantiated losses up to $20,000 per approved claim. For those with unsubstantiated losses, payments could reach up to $150 for one incident or $300 if both incidents are involved.

The upcoming settlement approval hearing for this class action is scheduled for May 25. However, it’s important to note that MGM denies all allegations and liability regarding these data breaches. According to Diamond and Diamond Lawyers LLP, “MGM denies all allegations and liability. No court has found MGM liable. The parties agreed to settle to avoid the risk and expense of continued litigation.” This statement underscores the complexities surrounding such legal battles.

Meanwhile, Google is also in the spotlight due to a preliminary $135 million settlement related to a class-action lawsuit over the misuse of Android users’ data. This settlement could potentially affect up to 100 million Android users across the United States.

To qualify for compensation, users must have utilized an Android phone with cellular data between November 12, 2017, and now. Payments are capped at $100 per eligible user—though it’s worth mentioning that not everyone will receive the maximum amount.

But why do these settlements matter? They highlight ongoing concerns about data privacy and security in an increasingly digital world. As companies like MGM and Google face backlash over their handling of personal information, users are reminded of their rights.

In summary, these developments reflect a broader trend towards accountability in corporate practices regarding user data. Affected individuals are now empowered to seek compensation as a result of these legal actions. Still, details remain unconfirmed regarding how quickly payments will be processed or how many claims will be approved.
