It’s arguably one of the best rivalries in the SJHL, the Melfort Mustangs, and Nipawin Hawks.

The two rivals meet for the first time in the 2018/2019 season tonight at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.

Both teams will be hungry for a win as both teams are on one game losing streaks heading into tonight.

The Mustangs lost 4-2 on Saturday in La Ronge, and Head Coach and General Manager Trevor Blevins says they just didn’t quite have enough compete.

“At times I thought against La Ronge on the weekend, even both games at times, we just didn’t have it. So we did a lot of small area stuff in practice where we’re leaning on our sticks and being physical.”

The Hawks are coming off a 4-2 loss to the Battlefords Stars on October 5th.

With both teams having nine games already under their belts, Blevins says “We know what Nipawin is, they’re a hard working team, they push the puck, and they have a lot of speed up front, and they crash the net hard too, so we have to be real good in front of our own net making sure we seal off and have good sticks.”

As for the offensive side, Blevins recognizes that last years SJHL Goalie of the Year is standing in front of them.

“We got to get to [Declan] Hobbs no doubt. He’s a big piece of their team, we have to take away his sight lines, and make sure we’re jamming pucks in. We got to pay the price to score goals because if he sees it, he’s going to stop it.”

The Mustangs dominated the Hawks last season going 8-1-1 against them, but Blevins says “It’s a new season, it’s a new group. Both teams look pretty much completely different. It’s a matter of adjusting to what their tendencies are, and making sure we execute. We’ve had success in the past, but we have to be ready, theres no question.”

The two teams will be in Nipawin tomorrow to complete the home and home.

Winmar Tisdale SJHL Hockey on CK750 will get going at 7:15 on both night with Mat Barrett’s Melody Motors pre-game show.

Other games in the SJHL tonight includes; Battlefords hosting Melville, Notre Dame visiting Humboldt, Yorkton heading to Kindersley, and Weyburn welcoming La Ronge.
