It will cost more for certain traffic offenses in Melfort.

Council has approved an amendment to the city’s Traffic Bylaw, and that includes higher fines for parking illegally in disabled spots.

“People that those spots are made for are truly in need of having to park close so it’s an attempt to keep people from parking in those spots that don’t belong there,” said Mayor Rick Lang.

Fines will increase from $100 to $150, and from $50 to $100 if paid within 14 days.

Lang said they hope the fine increases serve as a deterrent.

“Hopefully people are going to say ya know it’s just not worth it for a convenience that I don’t need,” said Lang.
