This week’s weather could lead to some issues for homes across the province.

The melt-freeze cycle is the perfect scenario for the formation of ice dams.

“Ice dam is a layer of ice build up on a roof that prevents melted ice and snow from draining off, the snow acts like a layer of insulation on your roof above your attic,” said SGI Canada’s Tyler McMurchy.

Water ends up in the attic as a result of the ice dam.

Prevention tips include using a roof rake to remove snow from your roof, clearing gutters and downspouts, keeping air moving in the attic, and making sure fans and vents are sealed.

Visit SGI Canada’s website for more information and tips on how to prevent ice dams.
