Firefighters are working to extinguish a house fire on the south end of the city this morning.

Melfort Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the fire on 2nd avenue just after 2am.

The fire started in the basement, worked its way up to the main floor and into the attic, according to Fire Chief Paul See.

Members have mostly extinguished the fire and are currently looking for hidden fires in the attic.

A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

See said that fortunately no one was home at the time of the fire and the family cat survived.
