Battlefords Wins Canalta Cup Title

The Battlefords North Stars are Canalta Cup champions.

They swept Flin Flon after a 6-5 win over the Bombers at the Whitney Forum last night.

The game was tied at 2 after one period, and Flin Flon scored twice early in the second to take a 4-2 lead.

But Battlefords answered with 2 goals to tie it at 4 after two.

Layne Young and Coby Downs then scored to make it 6-4 Battlefords, while Kristian St. Onge closed the scoring midway through the third for Flin Flon.

Downs was named the playoff MVP with 25 points in his 11 games.

Battlefords went 12-0 in the playoffs, and have won 60 of their 70 games this season.

The North Stars won their first league title in 17 years.

They will move on to the Western Canada Cup in Penticton.

The Portage Terriers won the MJHL title last night for a 3rd straight year, after a 1-0 win over OCN.

Battlefords and Portage join the AJHL’s Brooks Bandits, the Chilliwack Chiefs of the BCHL, and host Penticton Vees at the event which starts next Saturday.
